Five Years Too Many: Mobilzation and Non-violent Civil Disobedience in DC March 19

In 1776, during the American Revolutionary war, Thomas Paine wrote:

“These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.”
Iraq Veterans Against the War www.ivaw.org have put out a request for people to come to DC to support Winter Soldier Hearings and participate in Non Violent Civil Disobedience on the 19th of March.

On the east end East End Direct Action has put out the call for Winter Soldiers: patriots who are willing to stand up, sit down, or otherwise provoke the Congress, President and the American public to end the war in Iraq. We will join United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) and Iraq Veterans Against the War in Washington DC on March 19 (Wednesday).

From Ghandi, to Martin Luther King, From Sufferage to Abolition, From SNCC to CORE, From VIETNAM VETERANS AGAINST THE WAR to VETERANS FOR PEACE, we have learned the usefullness of NONVIOLENT CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE. We must return to that winning combination of public protest AND civil disobedience if we are ever going to convince our friends and neighbors that peace and justice are causes worth fighting for and that we are, in word and deed, Winter Soldiers.

UFPJ has initiated the planning and organizing for what we hope will be the largest day of nonviolent direct action and civil disobedience yet against the war in Iraq. We encourage people to be in Washington, DC, on March 19th to be part of the civil disobedience, or to assist in support work. We are working to have all 50 states represented in this massive action.

The Color of Blood: Calvin Trillin on the John White Case

The March 3 edition of The New Yorker carries a story by Calvin Trillin on the John White manslaughter case.

The article is available on the web.

The title of the piece is "The Color of Blood"

In an interview with NPR on Tuesday Mr. Trillin said:

"People saw what had happened completely differently according to what race they were. Some white people, including Dano's parents, were outraged that John White wasn't indicted for murder. And some supporters of White thought that if the races had been reversed — if it had been a white homeowner and four hostile teenagers yelling at him — there wouldn't have been any charge at all," he says.

Last week sentencing in the case was postponed until March 19. A summary of the case with links to other media accounts can be found at
