Town Buys Part of Shinnecock Hills Sacred Land

Tuesday evening the Southampton Town Board approved the purchase of two of four lots in the Shinnecock Hills owned by developer Robert Romeo.

The land, held sacred as the burial place of their ancestors by the Shinnecock Indians is on a bluff overlooking Shinnecock Bay.

It is being purchased with money from the Community Preservation Fund derived from a property transfer tax for 5.8 million dollars.

Speakers for the Inter Tribal Historic Preservation Task Force said the partial purchase undercut an agreement between the Town, Suffolk County and the Peconic Land Trust to acquire all the land.

Southampton Supervisor Patrick Heaney said the Town decided to move ahead since the purchase by the County would take much longer. Heaney said the Town is limited in the amount of money for any single purchase and is constrained to pay 'fair market value' for property under the CPF law.

Ruben Valdez of Shinnecock and the Preservation Task Force said that they have been advocating for the purchase for the past five years. In that time the market value of the land has increased, in part because of a Town approved sub-division plan.

One of the two remaining lots owned by Mr. Romeo contains an abandoned house which is of historic and architectural interest. Several speakers urged the Town to purchase the remaining property so the house could be preserved.

Rebecca Genia of Shinnecock said "of most concern to us, as Shinnecock people, is the protection of those who are buried in that ground"

September 29 (Friday): OLA Film Festival - La Niña Santa and La Vida es Silbar in Southampton at 6 pm

OLA - Organizacion Latino-Americana and the Parrish Art Museum present two films - free of charge Friday night starting at 6 pm.

The films are The Holy Girl(La Niña Santa) and Life is to Whistle(La Vida es Silbar) from Cuba. Both films are in Spanish with English subtitles.

The Holy Girl(2004), written and directed by Lucrecia Martel, mixes provocative, lyrical themes of forbidden sexuality and redemptive faith and explores the burgeoning sexuality and religious fervor of two teenage girls. Their teen imaginations conflate the erotic, the religious, and the lurid. Artfully piecing together a mosaic of nuanced and small moments, Director Martel creates a potent and specific portrait of adolescent life. The film is rated R and runs 106 minutes.

In the tradition of great Cuban films such as The Buena Vista Social Club, and Strawberry and Chocolate comes Life is to Whistle, an exuberant valentine to Cuba and its people. Combining surrealism, humor and insightful drama, Life Is To Whistle alternates between the romantic mishaps of three troubled people living in Havana: Mariana, a lusty young ballerina who takes a soon-to-be regrettable vow of chastity to land a coveted role; hunky musician Elpidio, a modern-day buccaneer who steals the wallets and the hearts of visiting tourists; and Julia, a sensitive social worker who literally faints at the very mention of the word sex. As they converge towards a momentous finale, the three lost souls interlock while reaching towards reconciliation, inclusion and healing. A magical blend of intriguing visuals and powerful music, Life is To Whistle is a charming life-affirming film about the ever-present search for happiness. Directed by Fernando Perez, the film runs 106 minutes and is not rated.
