American Promise

Letter to the Southampton Press:

The recent bias incidents on the East End are another urgent “call for action,” if any is needed. It is imperative to establish a work center to provide protection for both the day laborers and the contractors that hire them. At the same time, it is equally urgent to confront the misinformation and misplaced anger swirling around us.

Immigrants—whether documented or undocumented—don’t come here to take work away from people who came here before them. Many are driven by rural poverty, because peasants in their home country cannot compete with subsidized American products. And all are drawn because there are jobs here and employers who will hire them. Once they are here, they contribute to the economy, and many pay taxes (including Social Security taxes, for which they will never be able to draw benefits).

There are many who feel threatened by the relatively low wages paid to day laborers and frustrated by the lack of affordable housing on the East End. But instead of fighting the immigrants, I would urge us all to make common cause in a fight for a living wage, for housing and social justice for all. That, after all, is the American promise, is it not?

Anecdotal Evidence

A friend related this story the other night: Her friend passed by the Southampton 7-11, scene of a daily shape-up site which has been the focus of much attention lately. A group of anti-immigrant protesters have been frequenting the parking lot of the store for over a week now.

The friend is not bashful. She approached one of the protesters, a young man holding a large sign with the message "NO AMNESTY". "What does amnesty mean?", she asked. The picketer answered "I don't know. I'm just paid to stand here with this sign".

Could this be anecdotal evidence of a campaign by one of the national anti-immigrant groups with neo-fascist connections to use Southampton's immigrant problems to gain recruits?

Letter to the editor: You won't find us there.

14 May 2006

To the editor:

Have you ever been to Ellis Island? My cousin visited this shrine to US immigration several years ago in search of family history. Millions of US citizens trace their lineage to ancestors who came through this portal to the "land of opportunity".

But you won't find our family there. There is no reference to our paternal grandfather. It appears that Grandpa landed on a ship from Europe at a Canadian port in the 1880s.

The trail ends there. Subsequently, Grandpa turns up on the US census in the early 20th century along with his wife and 3 children, all US citizens. The conclusion: Grandpa was a wet-back, an "illegal immigrant" who crossed the St. Lawrence, not the Rio Grande! The statute of limitations and my having been born in this country probably insures my not being deported.

Knowledge of my history and that of all the legal and illegal immigrants who have come to these shores drives my resolve to help the latest wave of immigrants, They are refugees from the results of US foreign and trade policy.

My people came to escape the pogroms of eastern Europe. Our Latino neighbors came to escape poverty and the terror of US sponsored repressive regimes. Those who would turn back the latest wave of immigrants ought to re-visit their family history and think what they would do to support their family in the absence of jobs and security.
