Peace will come when the masses of people demand it

The death of the 2000th US soldier in the Iraq war was marked by vigils throughout the country on Wednesday October 26.

On Long Island people gathered in 10 locations including Sag Harbor, Greenport, Patchogue, Setauket and Stony Brook to call for an end to the war. In all an estimated 350 people braved cold winds to read the names of the dead, gather signatures for petitions to Congress and make phone calls to their Congressman.

In Melville a demonstrator sat down in the office of New York's Senator Hillary Clinton and was given a summons after threatening to stay until the Senator responds to a call to end the war.

Outside the Military Recruiting offices in Patchogue, one demonstrator was surprised when a recruiter told her 'thanks for being here'.

Asked what it will take to end the war, one long time peace advocate from Sag Harbor responded "More People". Quoting Dwight Eisenhower he said "Peace will come when the masses of people demand it".
